  • Serve the diverse community broadly through programming, partnerships and festivals
  • Be an advocate for the performing arts
  • Perpetuate the finest in artistic heritage
  • Commission new and experimental works
  • Develop educational programs designed to reach the community, including programs targeted specifically to youth

Vision Statement

The Strand Theatre will continue to produce high quality theatrical performances for Galveston and the surrounding communities. We will showcase the best of established and emerging performers and will help to nurture and develop new talent. It will also be a leader in promoting arts education throughout the region.

To achieve this vision, the Strand Threatre will be:

  • A promoter of the highest artistic standards for the varied performances it offers
  • A significant contributor to the culture and strength of the community and a relationship builder, serving to bring artists and the community closer together while strengthening its relationships with both
  • A promoter of arts education to broaden the interests of today's audiences and to provide learning opportunities for young people.
  • Artist oriented, playing an active role in providing opportunities for artists to develop their work and/or careers and strengthening the region's artistic environment
  • Regionally focused to include South Houston and the Clearlake area to Galveston known by its distinctive and meaningful identity and brand.

History

The Strand Theatre is a not for profit corporation chartered in the State of Texas in 1978. The theatre, then “The Strand Street Theatre,” began producing theatrical productions in 1977.

In May 1978, the organization moved to its present location at 2317 Ship’s Mechanic Row. In January 1982, through a generous grant from The Moody Foundation, the property was purchased as a permanent home for the theatre in the midst of Galveston’s newly revitalized Strand Historic District.

The facility, housed in the 1897 Opperman building, completed a major renovation in 1993 to create a technically advanced yet historically appealing property. Mr. and Mrs. George P. Mitchell, developers of the Tremont House and other historic Strand District properties, have provided major assistance in both renovation funding and operating contributions.
